Chapter 38

The days following Larina's reunion with her family were hard on her. She was quiet and somber, giving rarely to a smile and less often to laughter or levity. She avoided speaking to anyone but her brother, and then would often only use psyspeech. Vinesta and Adrea had made it their mission to dedicate themselves to the needs of the group so that Roark and Lyrria had more time with their children, but they also made a great effort to make Larina feel welcomed. When they struck camp just a day after Varick's appearance, Adrea and Vinesta had even taken it upon themselves to offer to carry more supplies so Lyrria could ride for a few days on the horse though she'd insisted she didn't require it.

Though Roark chaffed at the idea of forcing a princess and lady to carry leather saddlebags over their shoulders, he agreed to divide up the horse's load between all of them so the animal could carry Larina who was not accustomed yet to long hours of walking. They moved more slowly the first two days and stopped often, allowing everyone to rest and recover from their trials. In spite of the ease of their pace, everyone was quickly becoming irritable and eager for a good night's rest. When Roark was satisfied that they'd put enough distance between them and the two incidents the previous week, he grudgingly agreed to set up a camp with shelter. The timing of the break had turned out for the best, as rain came down in heavy sheets all night and the following day was drab, cold, and maintained an almost constant drizzle.

In spite of Larina's morose attitude, Laon's quiet attentiveness to his sister, the wearying travel, and the depressing weather, everyone was in high spirits. Thanks to Varick's generous donation to their group, the women had access to soap, Roark and Laon had a second tunic of fine gray silk to wear, and the meals became satisfying and delicious. Varick had left with them an entire medicinal bundle that contained very effective burn salve that eased Roark and Laon's angry skin, and Larina was still in remarkable health and wellbeing. Several pain-relieving tablets were handed out to Vinesta and Adrea to lessen their discomfort after carrying the new weight of the bags, and blisters were healed in less than an hour with an enchanted salve.

Roark had been surprised to discover the myriad of blue magecraft supplies, never once imagining the sinister Varick would have possessed the rare and coveted ability to mend wounds. The discovery at least explained Lyrria's physical euphoria and Larina's resistance to the wear and discomfort of new movement and activities. Larina enjoyed a constitution and resilience that far exceeded anyone else in the camp, including expedited healing. Roark traced the source of her extraordinarily fit qualities to a simple white-gold band encasing a blue sapphire stone that decorated her right index finger. Roark was impressed by the power of the trinket she thought nothing about except to say that her daddy gave it to her to always wear.
